The architects and engineers of A. M. Kinney provided the programming, space planning and design to complete the interior demolition and renovation of Lab Building No. 5 including the replacement of exterior doors, windows and redesign of the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and architectural systems. All levels of the building were redesigned as lab spaces with the exception of the attic which was devoted to offices, equipment rooms, freezer rooms, lab support spaces and utilities required to support those areas. All labs are standard NIH Modular design.

An additional 10,000 square feet of laboratory area was added adjacent to the two existing subterranean levels bringing total facility size to 82,000 square feet. The remodeled facility contains BL-1, BL-2 and BL-3 laboratories for research and development in molecular biology and chemical physics.
